Dear Shivanshi,
I met your sister last evening and she told me that you have been in the hospital for the last fifteen days because of high fever. I felt bad that all this while I had no idea about your illness.
Although I am happy to know that you are now recovering, I am sure you must have had a tough time being in the hospital for such a long duration. Also, I know you must be worried about your studies. Dear, don’t lose heart. I am sure that once you are fully-fit you would be able to cover all that you have missed in the last fortnight.
Take good care of yourself. I will visit you as soon as I can. Let me know if I can be of any help to you.

Your friend,
Mona
Q. 2.You are Arun. Write a letter to your father telling him about your poor performance in the school terminal tests. Also, assure him of your improvement in the half-yearly examinations.
Answer:
Examination Hall
New Delhi – 110072

15 May 2013

Dear father,
I am fine here and hope that all of you are doing well too.
I am extremely sorry to inform you that I have performed poorly in my first terminal test. I could not score good marks in any subject. However, I am sure that when I tell you the reason for my poor performance, you would empathize with me. Being the captain of my school hockey team, I constantly went with my team to play matches against other schools. Although we won few of them, while returning from the previous tournament, I fell ill and could not attend school for over a week. It is for this reason that I could not prepare well for the terminal test.
I assure you that the above reason is not an excuse. I will try to do fairly well in my half-yearly examinations and will not let you down, again.
Pay my regards to mother.
Your son,
Arun

Dear sir,

Subject: Need of urgent repair of the classroom assigned to VIII-C

With due respect, I would like to draw your kind attention towards the poor condition of our classroom that is room no. 15 on the first floor of the school building.
Our classroom is in need of urgent repair. There is dampness in the walls and the roof. It not only smells bad but the plaster has also started coming off the walls. This may pose health hazards in the approaching winter. Moreover, students cannot concentrate on their lessons with uncomfortable surroundings.
As it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to continue studying in the classroom, I request you to arrange for our classroom to get repaired at the earliest. Meanwhile, please assign another classroom to us.

Yours sincerely,
Anil

The Chief Engineer
Municipal Corporation of Delhi
New Delhi

Respected Sir,

Subject: Need for the construction of speed breakers in our area

I would like to bring to your notice the difficulty faced by the residents of Sun Enclave due to traffic snarls.
Though it is a residential area, a small factory built nearby has converted the by-lanes into a main road. A lot of heavy traffic has started moving through this area, creating problems for the pedestrians. Recently, two people were injured when they were hit by a fast-moving truck. Children are also suffering because of this as they are housebound.
It is for this reason that I request your department to construct speed breakers in this area as soon as possible. This will definitely put a check on the speed of vehicles, apart from allowing pedestrians to move freely. Your efforts would be highly-appreciated.

Yours truly,
Ashu Verma

The basic difference between informal and formal letters is that of the receiver. Informal letters are written to friends, family, relatives, and other near and dear ones, while, the formal letters are written for official purposes or to write to the editor of a magazine, the commissioner, the principal of a school, etc. It is compulsory to include a subject in a formal letter which is not necessary in an informal letter. We usually add both the addresses in a formal letter while it is only important to write the recipient's address in an informal letter. The language of a formal letter is also very formal and precise while one is allowed to use colloquial language in an informal letter.

ARTICLE WRITING 2

Q1.Avantika, a nutrition expert, has been asked to write an article for a magazine. Write the article on her behalf on the topic “Food and Emotions”.
Answer:
Food and Emotions
By Avantika
Can certain foods really make you happy? And, can lack of certain foods or just a few ingredients leave you sad and depressed? The answer is yes. The latest research shows the presence of a certain biochemical link between food and emotions.
Food does much more than to just fill our stomachs and physical hunger. It satisfies our emotions and our feelings. Our mood swings throughout the day. In the morning, we are generally active and a good hearty breakfast can pep up our mood in minutes. The afternoon meal generally makes one feel the need for some rest. While a cup of a coffee can put one back to work. Similarly, a fatty meal can make one feel soporific. The experts have used the term ‘emotional eating’ for this.
An emotional hunger comes on suddenly and needs to be satisfied instantly with the food that you crave for. Foods like ice creams and chocolates work wonders to uplift one’s mood. There are many more such examples that make one to believe in the connection between foods and emotions.

Q2.Given below is a picture. Using the ideas from the picture as well your own ideas, prepare an article to be published in your school magazine on the topic ‘Say No to Smoking’ in 120-150 words. You are Deepak/Deepika.

(Source: CBSE)
Answer:
Say No to Smoking
By Deepika
“Cigarette smoking is injurious to health”. Although this caution is printed on every cigarette pack, not many pay attention to it. Consequently, a large number of people lose their lives due to its addiction.
A cigarette contains thousands of chemical compounds and toxic substances. Research shows that cigarette smoking reduces life expectancy by a number of years. People who smoke are more likely to get affected by cancer and cardio-vascular diseases than the non-smokers.
Nicotine, a highly addictive drug, is an important component of cigarettes. Regular smokers are led to addiction due to this drug. Such people are possessed with an uncontrollable desire to smoke, which can be noticed through their strong emotional, mental, or physical reactions.
However, being addicted does not mean that we cannot stop. One must realize that smoking, merely, stains our teeth and deteriorates our health. Therefore, one must spread awareness about the ill-effects of smoking and say no to smoking.
