D.   Transitive and intransitive verbs
Refer the table of DR MRS VANDERTRAMPP. Some verbs are highlighted. They are both transitive and intransitive.
a)     Transitive verb – when a verb has a direct object i. e. it is followed by an object, it is transitive.
e.g.  1) Je descends ma valise. (I take down my suitcase.)
          2) Il sort son chien. (he takes out his dog)
In this case it is conjugated with avoir and not être. So passé composé is            J’ai descendu ma valise.
               Il a sorti son chien.
b)    Intransitive verb – when a verb does not have a direct object i.e. it is followed by a preposition, it is intransitive.
e.g.         1) Je sors chaque samedi. (I go out every Saturday.)
                2) Il descend par l’asensceur. (He goes down by lift.)
In this case passé composé is done with être.
             Je suis sorti chaque samedi.
             Il est descendu par l’asensceur.
Remember when you are conjugating a transitive verb from the list of 17 verbs its past participle doesn’t get extra e/s/es as per the subject but remains same all the time.

To use ‘être en train de’
Many times it is treated as present/past continuous tense. But  in French it may not be treated as a separate tense. It is used as an expression to tell that an action is going on and not completed.
e.g.   Il est en train d’éxpliquer le passé composé. ( He is explaining passé composé.)

ENGLISH_IN THE KINGDOM OF FOOLS

Answers to Text book questions:
1. What are the two strange things the guru and his disciple find in the Kingdom of fools?
Everything was different in the kingdom of fools. People worked in the night and slept during the day. Not only have the human beings even the animals stayed awake at night.  Anything and everything could be bought for a ‘Duddu’. A ‘Duddu’ could buy a mass of rice as well as a bunch of bananas.
2. Why does the disciple decide to stay in the Kingdom of Fools? Is it a good idea?
The disciple thinks of the easy life ahead. He didn’t want to leave the kingdom because everything was cheap. The disciple wanted only good cheap food.  He dreams of relishing every rich food on offer as everything cost same in that kingdom.
In the end the idea did not prove good for the disciple was chosen to be executed a he fit the stake due to his large size.
3. Name all the people who are tried in the king’s court, and give the reasons for their trial.
The merchant was the first accused because his house wall collapsed and killed the thief. The next person was the bricklayer as it was thought his bad workmanship created a weak wall. Then the dancer was accused of distracting the bricklayer resulting in poor quality of the wall. Next accused was the goldsmith who called the dancer time and again to deliver the jewellery which in turn led to the distraction of the bricklayer. The goldsmith passed the blame on the merchant’s father who wanted his order to be completed first hence the goldsmith couldn’t finish the dancer’s work. At last the wheel turned full circle and the blame came back to the original merchant.
4. Who is the real culprit according to the king? Why does he escape from the punishment?
Although it was the merchant’s father who was believed to be responsible for the collapse of the wall that killed the thief, the king proclaimed that he had inherited everything from his criminal father so the rich merchant was the real culprit according to the King. It was found that the rich merchant was too thin to be properly executed on the newly made stake. The worried king foolishly ordered his servants to look for a fat man to fit the stake. Thus, the merchant escaped the punishment.
5. What is the Guru’s wisdom? When does the disciple realize this?
The Guru’s wisdom was that there was no justice in the Kingdom of fools and due to the unpredictable behaviour of the fools; he wanted to leave the kingdom at once. The disciple remembers these words when the king decides that the disciple was the suitable person to fit the new stake.
6. How did the Guru manage to save his disciple?
It is often believed that our prayers are often heard and answered which was proved in the story. ‘In the Kingdom of Fools’. The king had ordered the execution of the disciple because he fit the new stake. The disciple prayed to the Guru to save him. The Guru saw everything in a vision because he had magic powers. He could see far, the future, the past and the present.
When the guru came, he whispered something in the disciple’s and then asked the king to execute him first and then the disciple. The disciple wanted to be the first on the stake. The two began fighting. The king was puzzled.
The guru explained to the king that the stake in his kingdom was new and was the stake of the god of justice. It had never had a criminal on it. So, first one who dies on it will be reborn as the king and the next one to die will be reborn as the minister.
The king did not want to lose the kingdom in the next life. The king and the minister went to the prison and disguised themselves as the guru and the disciple. Hence, they were executed.
It was his Guru’s advice and presence of mind that saved the disciple. The disciple realized his mistake of Guru’s not listening to the Guru’s words of wisdom.

ENGLISH_std IX THE LEGEND OF THE NORTHLAND TEXTUAL QUES ANSWERS

Answers to Textbook questions
Thinking about the Poem
I. 1. Which country or countries do you think “the Northland” refers to?
The Northland” could refer to any extremely cold country in the Earth's north polar region, such as Greenland, the northern regions of Russia, Canada, Norway etc.
2. What did Saint Peter ask the old lady for? What was the lady’s reaction?
Saint Peter asked the old lady for one of her baked cakes to satisfy his hunger. The lady tried to bake a small cake for the saint.
3. How did he punish her?
He punished the lady by changing her into a woodpecker that built ‘as birds do’ and gathered scanty food by boring in the ‘hard, dry wood’ all day long.
4. How does the woodpecker get her food?
The woodpecker gets her food by boring holes into trees.
5. Do you think that the old lady would have been so ungenerous if she had known who Saint Peter really was? What would she have done then?
No, the old lady would not have been so ungenerous if she had known who Saint Peter really was. Instead, she would have tried to please him with her cakes for the fulfilment of her greedy desires.
6. Is this a true story? Which part of this poem do you feel is the most important?
No, this not a true story; it is a legend. I feel that the point in the story where the old lady is changed into a woodpecker is the most important. This is because the punishment meted out to the lady teaches us the value of generosity and charity.
7. What is a legend? Why this poem is called a legend?
A 'legend' is a popular story from the past which is believed by many but one cannot prove whether it is true or not. It usually contains a message or a moral. The poet himself says that he doesn't believe this tale to be true. This poem is called a 'legend' because it preaches generosity towards fellow beings.
8. Write the story of ‘A Legend of the Northland’ in about ten sentences.
Once Saint Peter stopped by an old lady's cottage because he was feeling hungry and weak after the day's fasting. The lady was baking cakes on the hearth. The saint asked her for a cake from her store of cakes. The selfish lady tried to bake small cakes but each time they seemed too big for her to give away. Finally, she baked one that was as thin as a wafer. Unable to part with it too, she put it on a shelf and did not give any cake to the Saint. Saint Peter was very angry with her behaviour and said she was too selfish to live as a human and have food, shelter and a fire to keep her warm. He punished her by changing her into a woodpecker that would have to build a nest to live in, bore for food in the trunks of trees. Her clothes were burned and she was left with her scarlet cap on her head as she flew out through the chimney. Even today she still lives in the woods and is seen by all the country school boys.
