DEBATE WRITING 1

Points to Remember
Debate is a discussion communicating one’s argument and views on a subject in front of an audience. It always has two sides – propositional and oppositional. A debater has to take a stand either ‘for’ or ‘against’ the given topic, and an opponent questions him. A good debater is one who convinces the audience to agree with his own point of view on the given topic.
Tips and Guidelines:
·         Choose your area of debate. Understand the requirement of the topic you are working on.
·         You need to choose whether you want to argue ‘for’ or ‘against’ the motion. However, being well aware of the content of the opponent is useful and an added benefit.
·         Be prepared and coolheaded. Staying on the right track is extremely essential for proving your point well before your opponent. Your written speech has to be very thorough.
·         Use your resources well, keeping in mind the various advantages and disadvantages your topic might have. Study well and prepare your introduction; it is important to give the initial views in a precise manner.
·         Outline your main points and put emphasis on them in order to make your opponent judge your position as a strong one. Breaking down your topic into smaller points can trigger your memory during the debate.
·         You should also prepare yourself to respond to your opponent’s arguments. So, it is imperative to study the matter in depth.
Format of Debate Writing
1.    Address the listeners/Audience
A) Start by addressing the  people present there (e.g. Respected Judges, teachers etc.)
B) Greet them (e.g. Good Morning, Good Evening etc.)

2.    Opening Lines
Mention the topic of the debate for the benefit of the listeners.
3.    Body
Put forward and explain your views with suitable example and analogies/comparisons.
4.    Conclusion
Prove your point of view as the right and the most important point.
5.    Closing Note
Thank the audience for patiently listening to the debate.

SPEECH WRITING 2

Sample Speeches
Q. 1. The recent changes in the evaluation system of education are a hot topic of discussion. Your principal decides to address the topic in the school assembly. Write a speech for her. The topic is: ‘Is CCE better than board exams?’
Answer:
Is CCE Better than Board Exams?
Good morning teachers and my dear students. Today, I would like to address the question whether CCE or Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation is better than board exams.
As we know major changes have been brought about in our education system. The new scheme of education brings a whole new picture to the traditional education system. It aims to divide the syllabus into two semesters, thereby reducing the burden and mental pressure on students. Promoting comprehensive study, the new system would lead to improved performance of the students.
Besides academic help, it introduces grade system which evaluates important qualities like teamwork, innovation, behaviour, etc. This would help in the development of the overall personality of students. However, there are some disadvantages in this system, which include the difficulties it poses in the marking system and the over-engagement of students in projects. Nonetheless, I think students are going to reap the benefits of this change eventually.
Thank you.
Q.2. You are deeply affected by the negative impact of television commercials on children. You decide to give a speech in your school assembly. Write this speech using the following notes.
• Children imitate
• Promote smoking etc.
• No censor
• Bad habits
• obesity
Answer: Television Commercials and Children
Good morning to our Principal, teachers and my dear friends. I stand before you to deliver a small speech on the harmful effects that television commercials can have on young children.
Every program on the TV has commercial breaks. Many of these advertisements and commercials have adverse affects on children. Young children often take the things shown on TV to be real. For example, they may try to imitate the stunts presented in the motorcycle commercials. Some advertisements might seem to promote smoking, drugs, alcohol, etc. To check the correct form of projection, concerned authority needs to censor the ads. Again, clever and striking rendering often attract children to unhealthy food. Many children turn obese due to the bad habits encouraged by such commercials.
It is important to realize that screening is not really possible when it comes to advertisements. Hence, an overall check has to me done. All commercials should be made keeping in mind the children viewership.
 Thank you.

Answer:
Mr. and Mrs. Gupta were grief stricken by Rajesh's death, who had been their servant for over fourteen years. It was an accident which left painful memories etched on the minds of the Guptas. As time passed, they started regaining momentum of their lives. However, soon they started getting blank calls at night. These calls always came after they had gone off to sleep and that too on their landline. It was a pain to get off the bed, and the routine soon became frustrating and irritating as no one spoke on the other end. However, one night Mrs. Gupta noticed that the door was unlocked. Before long the couple realised that the phone rang only when they had left the door unlocked. And eventually, it dawned on them that this might be a way in which Rajesh wanted to inform them about their carelessness, taking care of their safety even after he had died.

Answer:
One morning as I went for a morning walk, I noticed some bushes shaking. Since it was not a windy morning, it seemed unnatural. Out of curiosity I walked towards the bush and to my utter amazement, saw a zombie! It hurried towards the nearby graveyard and I followed him. He seemed a little uncomfortable but he did not dissuade me from following him. After reaching the graveyard, he asked me to sit with him. He told me fascinating things about their nature and lifestyle. He also told me how upset he was with the wrong depiction of zombies in the movies. I felt embarrassed at our puny perspective about such sweet and friendly beings. Although I wanted to know more about them, he suddenly stood up and left in a jiffy. Suddenly, I was all alone in the graveyard. Till this day I have been trying to assess the feasibility of the encounter.
